Stow board votes 5-0 to suspend Wedgwood's liquor license three days

Stow Select Board suspends Wedgwood Country Club's liquor license for three days over unpermitted outdoor service and fireworks. The board voted unanimously to suspend the license Aug. 20-22, requiring the club to pay for a police detail with golf-cart access or close entirely, after members said an October warning about permitting deficiencies went unheeded. Member Brian Patuto called the lapses "serious, serious breakdowns," while member Dan Petersen said the pattern led him to lean toward calling it "willful neglect" rather than carelessness.
Attorney Dawson Cooper, representing the club, said an application to amend the license premises to cover the grounds, golf course and pool was filed July 10. The board also voted 4-1, with Clerk Ingeborg Hegemann dissenting, to provisionally allow outdoor alcohol service on the patio, conditioned on compliance with bylaws and the club's special permit and no entertainment after 10 p.m. A Wedgwood co-owner said he had spent $275,000 on a protective net for a neighbor and warned the town "will put me out of business." A formal public hearing on the permanent premises amendment is set for August 25.
